  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

    Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

New Assassin's Creed games have become an annual event over the last few years. Unlike many sequels, that are mild re-workings of the previous title, each new Assassin's Creed game brings an incredible amount of new locations, characters and gameplay tactics to the table. Being set in a computer-created virtual history, the Assassins Creed franchise has the luxury to jump around both the globe and historical timeline with abandon. This time the series alights in the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy - the early 18th century. As you may expect, the adventure relies heavily on the nautical battle aspects of the game that were first introduced in Assassin's Creed III. Otherwise, the game features the same free roaming, adventure combat game style that players of the series have come to love. But as usual Ubisoft has tweaked things to make it a fresh and exciting experience. The game is more open, more quickly, preventing the user having to complete too many linear missions before unlocking extra areas of the game world. This leads to a more free-roaming and exploratory game style from the beginning. As you are more victorious in combat, you will be able to use your spoils to upgrade your ship. And you'll be able to recruit your crew from captured boats, or add the vessel to your fleet. But beware, as your notoriety rises, pirate hunters will begin to try and capture you for a reward. Combat has been changed to allow for "free aiming" rather than being target-lock based. And you can carry multiple weapons and chain attacks. As usual, as well as the historical aspects of the game, there is a "present day" section, which requires the user to explore the Abstergo offices in Montreal, Canada. As you move around the offices, avoiding combat, you can eaves-drop on Abstergo employees and hack into their computer systems, to learn more about the huge conspiracy in which Desmond Miles is enmeshed.

  • Batman: Arkham Knight

    Batman: Arkham Knight

The Batman: Arkham games have been growing in scope since Arkham Asylum showed the world how superhero games should be done way back in 2009. Arkham Knight promises to be the biggest, most epic game in the series yet. Billed by series creator Rocksteady Games as the conclusion to its trilogy, the game brings the full sprawl of Gotham city to life for the first time.

It's all-out war this time as The Scarecrow returns to unite the villains of Gotham against the caped crusader. In tow are not just infamous favourites such as Harley Quinn, The Penguin, Poison Ivy, Two-Face and the Riddler, but an all-new villain created especially for the game with help from comics superstars Geoff Johns and Jim Lee.

As with previous games, Arkham Knight takes players right into the world of the Dark Knight, giving players the closest experience to being the Batman they're going to get (outside putting on the cape and cowl themselves, which we wouldn't recommend). Gameplay revolves around stealth, detective skills, and the freeflow combat the series brought to the gaming world at large. Enhancements have been made, with new moves and high-tech gadgetry in the fray. For the first time Batman can deploy gizmos such as batarangs, the grapnel gun or the line launcher while flying!

A big selling point for many will be the introduction of a driveable Batmobile. With a brand-new design, the souped-up vehicle can be used right across the Gotham map. That might be for a high-speed chase, or it might be for intense battles on the streets.

Arkham Knight also features 'most-wanted' side missions, in which players encounter high-profile criminal masterminds and can choose to take them down individually or pursue the core story mode.

This is the big one, folks.

  • Bloodborne

    Bloodborne

To say From Software's Demon's and Dark Souls games hit big is something of an understatement. Many consider them to be among the greatest games ever released, and the impact they've had on the role-playing game genre has been huge. They stepped away from the tropes that have kept the genre alive for so long and put the emphasis firmly on the player's skill, smarts and grit. And, while everyone's attention was on Dark Souls II, director Hidetaka Miyazaki and From Software's A-team were making the PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne. Certain elements from the Souls games make a return. You collect blood echoes from fallen enemies rather than souls, dying is quite similar and movement can feel similar. While these are commonalities, however, Bloodborne does much to set itself apart. The most obvious change is in the environment. The game shifts from a medieval world to one that splices Victoriana with gothic horror. Technology of the industrial revolution litters the environment. So, in many cases, do severed limbs and prone corpses. The developer has really gunned its engines on the environment, opening things up with wide open spaces and twisted, labrynthine interiors. The biggest shift in combat comes in the form of the gun. This effectively replaces the shield in the Souls games and shifts the balance of combat. Where the Souls games were about carefully balancing offence and defence, Bloodborne is all about going on the attack. It's a much more aggressive style with little room for a shield. Things are faster, too, with a new dash move enabling sweeping rushes around enemies while locked on. Melee weapons can be used in two ways, with each offering a fast, close quarters attack and a slower, more powerful, ranged attack. While some things have changed since the Souls games, there is of course one thing fans can count on - Bloodborne is fiendishly challenging and sure to provide players with plenty of meat to sink their teeth into...

  • Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

    Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection packs in Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (plus all DLC) and serves them up on the new generation of games consoles for the first time. Borderlands 2 Welcome back to Pandora! No, not the Pandora with the really tall aliens running around a la James Cameron's Avatar. Nope, this is the mineral-rich Pandora in which players run around with anarchic glee, shooting everything in site and gathering as much loot as possible. So, what's new? For starters, Gearbox added a number of gameplay features that can help you out in a pinch - the most direct one being a special perk that can be activated by hitting the trigger buttons. When you're not pumping lead, your ammo is replenished over time too, allowing you to go on a proper killing frenzy when you're nearly down and out. Insta-Health vials will only go so far this time around. What changes the game - in a good way - is the introduction of Badass ranks. While characters still have a level cap of 50, Badass ranks don't have such a limit. When you level up in this manner, you earn a Badass token, which can be used to spend on increasing a number of base statistics. The genius here is that tokens spent to increase stats are applied to every single character you have on your profile. Add the mystery of golden chests, and the secret golden keys that require special actions to obtain, and you have a sequel that puts a lot of emphasis on the RPG side of things. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel In a world of endless sequels, reboots and prequels, Gearbox Software has something new for us - the pre-sequel. Set between Borderlands and Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel gives fans the chance to step back into the world of Pandora. This entry to the series follows Handsome Jack, the maniacal baddy everyone loved to hate in Borderlands 2. The game comes with four new playable characters, each bringing their own abilities to the table. Wilhelm has his pair of drones - one for bombing enemies, one for healing himself. Nisha... well, Nisha's basically an unstoppable slaughter machine, filling the screen with hot lead. Athena has a shield that absorbs incoming damage, turning it to energy that can be turned back on enemies. Then there's Claptrap - yes, the goofy robot from Borderlands 2 - whose abilities are unpredictable on account of them changing depending on the situation. What's more, the skill tree is chock full of crazy abilities to win. Want to turn into a walking nuclear bomb? Sure, why not...? New tweaks have been made to gameplay, too. Low gravity combat means you can leap away from enemies (or anywhere you want, really) in a single bound, while new gear means you can freeze enemies solid or fry them to a crisp with laser-class weapons. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel delivers new goodies without ever straying too far from the shoot 'n' loot gameplay and anarchic sensibility gamers first fell in love with it for.

  • Bound by Flame

    Bound by Flame

Bound by Flame comes with a fair amount of hype surrounding it. That's partly because release is due during a bit of an RPG drought, but more than that its intriguing premise and impressive visuals have struck a chord. The game takes place in a high fantasy land beseiged by seven ice lords and riddled with monsters such as scythes, swamp beasts and ghosts. Humanity has been fighting against the ice lords for its survival for a very long time, but one way or another the war will end soon. You play as Vulcan, a mercenary tasked with trying to defend the land (Vulcan is fully customisable, with the option to pick her/his gender, by the way). As the story begins, however, a failed attempt by Vulcan to raise a fire demon sees him/her possessed. This gives rise to one of the game's key game mechanics, as Vulcan is gifted with flame powers at the potential cose of her/his humanity. Players must constantly work within this duality, choosing whether to embrace these dark powers or try to find a more heroic path. Players can tackle three skill trees to master one ability set or another. They can choose to go down the strong 'tank' route, the nimbler 'ranger' route or really embrace the pyromancy powers. How you play is reflected in the plot, too, with branching storylines that are affected by your actions.

  • Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

Demon's Souls really established FromSoftware's reputation as a developer that wants to take your sense of hope and gnaw on it using the jaws of zombified rats. Dark Souls, the game's spiritual successor, took that and ran with it. Now the developer is back once again with a sequel in both name and spirit. The game features a new world, new storyline and an unfamiliar world steeped in death and despair. Expect the same uncompromising difficulty, the same epic boss battles and the same incredible sense of empowerment that comes with triumphing against the odds as the first game. Don't, however, expect something quite so straightforward as a re-skinned version of Dark Souls. The game's online has been made a little more approachable this time out. Voice chat is now supported and by aligning yourself with certain in-game gods you'll be able to summon friends to help you lay waste to whatever particular beast is challenging your will to live. You can also now travel between bonfires right from the outset of the game and the health system is a little more forgiving, with life gems complementing the flasks of the last game. Don't despair that FromSoftware has gone soft, however, as you'll lose a little more of your life bar every time you die. The world is perhaps not quite so bleak as those of past games, but it does offer up its own sights to bear witness to. An eerie village sits at the sea shore, with desperate locals trying to pedal their wares, while a tangled, ruined castle lurks at the heart of the forest. Scholar of the First Sin also includes the first three downloadable content packs released for the original game, Crown Of The Sunken King, Crown Of The Old Iron King, and Crown Of The Ivory King. On top of that, this new version will get some brand-spanking new content for players to battle through. So, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin is not quite the same beast as the previous games. Did anyone want that, though? It's still a fiendishly difficult game set in a rich, brutal fantasy world. And there's still plenty of dying to be done.

  • Diablo III: Reaper of Souls: Ultimate Evil Edition

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls: Ultimate Evil Edition

Thankfully the wait between Diablo III and this expansion, Reaper of Souls, wasn't as long and torturous as between the previous two games. As an addition to the epic threequel, Reaper of Souls offers up more story, new environments, a raised level cap and a whole new class of character. Given that you (spoiler alert!) dispatched Diablo at the end of the main game, a new villain is in order here. Developer Blizzard has, of course, obliged. Malthael, the fallen Archangel of Wisdom, disappeared after the goings-on of Diablo II. In Reaper of Souls he returns, this time as the Angel of Death. He seizes the Black Soulstone, which contains the pure essence of the Prime Evil and begins to rain hell on the world. Your first taste of the world in question is in the burning city of Westmarch. You'll fight your way through mystic ruins, tangled swamplands, eerie cemeteries and strange battlefields. While there isn't a huge number of new environment types, the ones there are are of a decidedly different flavour to those in the main game. If you're looking to change up how you play a bit, too, there's a new character class on hand to help out. The Crusaders are warriors that have been on a centuries-long quest to burn out the corruption blighting their Zakarum faith. They wear heavy armour, wield cruel weapons and use magic to strengthen friends and weaken foes. In short, they're natural tanks. There's also good news for those wishing to focus on their existing party - Reaper of Souls raises Diablo's level cap to 70. The Ultimate Evil edition on console offers gamers the chance to play with up to three other friends on screen at once, or remotely over the network. The new Apprentice mode also boost low-level friends' powers while playing with high-level friends, and an in-game mail system allows them to share treasures. The Ultimate Evil edition packs all the punch of the PC version, but optimised to run on the big screen in your living room.

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition

    Dragon Age: Inquisition

While Dragon Age Origins was hailed by many as a new tour-de-force from famed roleplaying game developer BioWare, many felt that the sequel didn't live up to its predecessor's strong start. Inquisition, though, has been widely hailed as a return to form. An apocalyptic event has thrown Thedas into chaos, opening rifts that are raining down terror. Dragons ravage the sky, casting dark shadows across the land. Mages are in a state of all-out war against the Templars. Nations are warring. Into this chaos you must step, using your strange ability to close rifts and banish demons. The world is bigger and more open than ever before, so players looking to explore are in for a treat. This is a huge game, packed with epic hubs and tons of side content. BioWare says that it will take over 100 hours to complete everything. It's appropriate, as this is the biggest Dragon Age story yet. For players new to the series, or those jumping to a new platform (or even those who don't feel happy with decisions they made in the last two games) EA has an online tool that can be used to select details from earlier games in the series and apply them to your save file. On the combat front, BioWare has drawn on both the previous games in the series, pulling together the more strategic feel or Origins with the action focus of the sequel. The result is combat that has weight, but won't enable players to thrash around like they're beating up angels in Bayonetta. Adding to that is a multiplayer option. It's a co-op mode that works a lot like Gears of War's Horde, forcing players to work together against wave after wave of enemies. In other words, if you're looking for something epic in scope, Dragon Age Inquisition has you covered.

  • Dying Light

    Dying Light

From the company that brought the world Dead Island comes Dying Light. The former was a game about an island overun by the undead and this game is... well, it's a game about a city overun by the undead. But Techland certainly proved its chops with zombies in the first game and has done a lot to set this one apart. The inclusion of parkour-style movement goes a long way to separating Dying Light from Dead Island - it makes for a quicker game that can generate an exhilarating feeling of speed and elegance as you move through the undead horde. It's this first-person free running that really marks Dying Light out as its own game. You play as Crane, a GRE operative sent into the quarantined city of Harran to track down some guy who stole a file from your employers. You end up playing a double agent, helping the survivors within the city as well as using them to find the file. When night time falls the city of Harran changes. Zombies give way to mutated abominations called Volatiles - fast, agile monsters that are almost unstoppable in the early game. If you try to run you will die, if you stand and fight without your UV torch out you will die. The action isn't all about free running. There's also a fair bit of melee combat, complete with cool-looking improvised weaponry and satisfying slow motion head shattering. There's also a scattering of more explosive weaponry. There is little more satisfying than standing on a rooftop and tossing some firecrackers in to the street to draw in the large herd of stumbling infected and then nonchalantly tossing a Molotov cocktail in to the milling mass and cackling with glee as the fire spreads, clearing out a whole section of road, giving you enough space and time to pick the lock on a police van and claim the goodies inside. It's also worth noting Dying Light's multiplayer 'be the zombie' mode. If you're the zombie, be prepared to become an undead Spider-Man of sorts. You are guaranteed to have a blast tormenting your human prey, especially if they are uncoordinated and bumble around in the dark. So, whether you're living or dead, Dying Light has something to offer you.

    Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD

The days when Japan got all the best role-playing games are pretty much behind us. As ever more games that once seemed consigned to Japan-only release make it to Western shores, Square Enix has thrown Final Fantasy Type-0 into the ring with an HD remake of the PSP original. The game takes place on Orience, a dark world governed by crystals but ravaged by war. The game focuses on Class Zero, a group from an elite military academy in the Vermillion Peristylium region. Using the magic and abilities of these fourteen characters, players must enter the war and attempt to uncover the secrets of its origins. The action-focused combat will be the big pull for many. It features all the main features players have come to love, including lock-on, magic, physical attacks, dodging and synergy between characters. Each character has their own strengths, and as you play and get to know them combat deepens. Most of the time you'll control three characters, switching between them on the d-pad at will and adjusting tactics accordingly. Every one of your fourteen characters has a role to play, and you'll benefit from mastering them. There are also some RTS elements thrown in for good measure. They play out on the world map, and you can sway the course of the war by invading towns, redistributing troops and using your own magic. Devoted fans will also be pleased to know that there's a good 40 hours of gameplay here, and if you want to do everything there is to do that doubles. Plenty to tide everyone over until XV hits...

  • Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series

Based on the award-winning HBO television drama series, Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series tells the story of House Forrester. Caught up in the events of The War of the Five Kings, they are placed in a precarious position where members of the household must do everything they can to prevent the house from meeting its doom.

Some cast members of the television series will reprise their roles in the game. While players will control five members of House Forrester in their story, the series will have them interacting with fan favorite characters throughout the season, including Tyrion Lannister performed by Peter Dinklage, Cersei Lannister performed by Lena Headey, Margaery Tyrell performed by Natalie Dormer, and Ramsay Snow performed by Iwan Rheon. Additional cast members will appear in later episodes.

The game series is based on the world, characters and events seen in HBO's TV show, which in turn is based on George R. R. Martin's books (A Song of Ice and Fire). The events in the game series begin towards the end of Season Three of the series, and end right before the beginning of Season Five. Players will visit familiar locations such as King's Landing and The Wall, as well as unfamiliar locations such as Ironrath, the home of House Forrester.

House Forrester is a noble house from the Wolfswood in the north of Westeros. Bannermen to House Glover, they have always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North - the Starks. The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering ironwood trees. Built over fifteen hundred years ago by Cedric Forrester and his triplet sons, Ironrath is a testament to the strength and endurance of ironwood. The Forrester house words are 'Iron from Ice', which echoes their belief that - like the ironwood itself - the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscape of the North only makes them stronger.

The game will be played from five different points of view. Each is either a direct Forrester family member, or a person in service to the House. Scattered across Westeros and Essos, each will play their part in seeking to save House Forrester from destruction.

Playing as five characters not only reflects the epic scope of Game of Thrones, but is also something that the player needs to be mindful of. The actions of one character can ripple out to affect the rest of House Forrester. Multiply the actions of one character by five, and you're truly playing the Game of Thrones... where you win, or you die.

This Season Pass disc includes episode one and offers access to the others as they become available.

  • Grand Theft Auto V

    Grand Theft Auto V

One of the biggest events of the last console generation is finally striding onto more powerful formats! GTA V finally makes its next-gen debut. With GTA IV having taken place in a decidedly east coast sort of setting in Liberty City, this game takes things over to the west coast. The action takes place in Los Santos and the surrounding countryside of San Andreas. Los Santos has seen better days. A sprawling metropolis full of faded stars, self-help gurus and desperate celebrities, the city has declined somewhat in the face economic uncertainty and cheap reality TV. In need of a big score are Franklin, a former street-level gangster; Michael, an ex-con living the high life in witness protection and Trevor, who's a bit on the sociopathic side. These are the three characters through whose eyes you'll see Los Santos. Of course, you'll do a lot more than looking around. The game is centred around six big heists, with plenty of driving, shoot-outs and other assorted missions to get stuck into in between. The open world map is huge, with hours upon hours of content on offer. If you should happen to get through it all, however, there's a whole other side to the game. GTA V also gets you access to GTA Online, a sprawling persistent world for you and up to 15 other players to play in either cooperatively or against each other in traditional competitive modes. With the next-gen version, players get the advantage of higher levels of detail than have ever been seen in GTA before, with better draw distances, finer texture detail and denser traffic to make the city seem more vibrant than ever.

    inFAMOUS: First Light

As an add-on to the PlayStation 4-exclusive inFamous: Second Son, First Light has a fair bit of meat to it. Players step once again into the super-fast, neon pink shoes of Abigail 'Fetch' Walker. It's an opportunity to step back into the character's past as she's being interrogated in the dark hole of a prison for superhumans that is Curdun Cay. Players will experience the development of Fetch's powers then use them to become a trained killer, ultimately using them to escape the maximum security prison to seek revenge against those who've wronged her. There are a couple of new powers in play to keep things interesting. One sees Fetch run through pink neon clouds across the streets and rooftops of Seattle for a speed boost. Neon homing missiles and melee finishers also add a flourish to combat. The challenge maps of Second Son also make a comeback, but in a story context. These work well with Fetch, upping the challenge by limiting her ability to just escape across the map at super speed. Players looking to extend the experience of Second Son - or get their toes wet without paying for the full game - will get what they need from First Light.

inFamous and it's (somewhat predictably-named) successor inFamous 2 were highlights of the PS3. They blended acrobatic parkour with an open world and elemental super-heroic fun. Depending on how you feel about the Batman games they were also, arguably, the best superhero games of the generation, without an established property or a costume in sight. We're in the age of the PlayStation 4 now, however, and with new hardware comes something of a new direction, as well as a brand new protagonist in Delsin Rowe. Voiced by Troy Baker, Delsin is a conduit. If it's been a while since you've spent time in the world of inFamous, that's a metahuman. Unfortunately for him, the world's had enough of superhumans and the government's cracking down on them. Delsin's a younger protagonist that Cole McGrath was, though his youth comes with a dash of arrogance to offset it. Delsin takes on the abilities of other Conduits as he defeats them. You start off with smoke-based powers, but quickly pick up new abilities such as flame-based abilities and strange neon powers. The venue's changed, too - this time we're in Seattle. That's right in developer Sucker Punch's back yard, so expect lots of knowing detail. The city's countercultural heritage is a perfect setting for playing an outsider hero at odds with authority, and it's mix of buildings provides ample opportunity for the free-running the series is known for. The morality system is back, and how brutal or squeaky clean you opt to play will affect the course of your game.

  • Just Cause 3

    Just Cause 3

Rico is back, and this time it's personal.

Yes, that sounds like a tagline in an '80s blockbuster action movie. Yes, that's quite appropriate for Just Cause 3. The Mediterranean republic of Medici is trapped in the thrall of General Di Ravello, a diabolical dictator. It just so happens that Medici is the home of our hero, Rico Rodriguez, and the general may have bitten off more than he can chew.

The island (and its neighbours) offer up a huge open world for players to explore, shoot at and blow up. Developer Avalanche says there are 400 square miles to roam, and that huge scale is something of an indicator of what the studio is going for with the third entry in the Just Cause series. It's always been about tackling your enemies and the environment in the most outrageous, over-the-top way possible, and now there's even more stuff to blow up. Imagine the finale of your favourite action movie, then imagine that you get to play through it, and that it will keep going for hours and hours and... well, hours.

Players must re-take the island, armed to the teeth and handling their trusty grapple. Rico has an unlimited supply of C4, and the game really rewards experimenting with huge destructible landmarks and plenty of spectacle.

As well as taking down enemies, players can engage in wingsuiting, parachuting, skydiving and any number of vehicle-related hijinks. That might mean racing, it might mean hanging off the back of a plane or it might mean attaching a car to the back of a bus and driving it off a cliff, just to see what happens.

Just Cause 3 is a huge, explosive playground that's waiting for you to get creative.

  • LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

    LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is the most ambitious LEGO game starring the Caped Crusader yet. While it does, of course, have Batman and Robin front and centre, it could almost have been called 'LEGO DC Superheroes', such is the size of the cast and the scope of the adventure. The 'Beyond Gotham' part of the title is certainly justified. This time out, the Dark Knight is out in space on a cosmic adventure. Braniac, who's more often known for bothering Superman, has been stealing entire cities, shrinking them down using the power of Lantern rings to add them to his sinister collection. So, right off the bat (pun slightly intended) you can see that the scale of the game has been expanded since previous entries to the series, drawing on the mythos of both Green Lantern and Superman. There's a cast to match this newfound scale, with more than 150 characters ranging from icons like Wonder Woman to the lesser-known (but no less important) figures like... well, Bat-cow. Expect The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Zatanna, Lex Luthor, The Joker and Swamp Thing to name just a tiny handful. Players can unlock different versions of characters, too, like the 1960s TV Batman (voiced by Adam West!) who lifts his cape to sneak past foes, or Arctic Batman, with a freeze gun. Gameplay is, as series fans will expect, along the usual LEGO lines. There's a dash of combat, a spot of platforming, a fair amount of environmental puzzle-solving and drop-in/drop-out cooperative play. As ever, it's all delivered with a light touch and a healthy dose of humour. That's not to say there's nothing new here, however. In one level, for example, our heroes encounter a battleship belonging to the Reach and the encounter plays out as a 2D shooter, much like Resogun. Let's be honest, though, most players will come for the sense of fun and the chance to play with that HUGE cast of characters.
