  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Peter Jackson's complete epic big screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy - filmed back-to-back and released over 3 consecutive years. In 'The Fellowship of the Rings' (2001) Frodo (Elijah Wood) is a hobbit living in the Shire, a quiet, peaceful part of Middle Earth. When it turns out that his elderly relative Bilbo (Ian Holm) is harbouring the ultimate Ring of Power and the evil Nazgul riders of Sauron are coming to find it, Frodo is entrusted by wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to deliver the Ring out of the Shire without it falling into their hands. Frodo leaves the Shire aided by his cousins Merry (Dominic Monaghan), Pippin (Billy Boyd) and trusty friend Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin), but they soon realise that the agents of Mordor are everywhere and that their trip is far from over. Once they reach the Elvish realm of Rivendell the Hobbits form part of the anti-Sauron fellowship, which includes Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Boromir (Sean Bean), Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom), Gimli the dwarf and of course Gandalf. Together they must battle across Middle Earth to destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom, the fiery chasm in the centre of Mordor. In 'The Two Towers' (2002) the Fellowship of the Ring has now divided and Sam and Frodo are lost in the hills of Emyn Muil. They are also being followed by Gollum, a creature who promises to help them find the Mountain of Doom. Meanwhile Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli search for the hobbits Merry and Pippin in the Kingdom of Rohan, which is currently being attacked by Saruman's orc armies. Gandalf returns as Gandalf the White to remind Aragorn of his destiny to unite the people of Rohan with Gondor. Whilst the Fellowship are not travelling together they must unite against the powerful forces coming from the Two Towers: Orthanc Tower in Isengard where Saruman has bred a deadly army of 10,000, and Sauron's fortress at Barad-dûr. Finally, 'The Return of the King' (2003) won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Gandalf manages to rally Gondor's fallen army with the help of King Theoden of Rohan for the biggest battle in the history of Middle-earth; and Aragorn finally faces up to his responsibilities. They are obviously out-numbered but are determined to keep Sauron distracted in order to enable Frodo to complete his quest to destroy the Ring by throwing it into the fires of the Mountain of Doom.

    FIFA 16

With the Pro Evolution Soccer series getting better and better, the heat is on for EA's FIFA to keep performing. Fortunately, the series has got a new spring in its step over the last couple of versions, and blustery phrases on the back of FIFA 16's box such as 'confidence in defending', 'moments of magic' and 'control in midfield' promise more than just hype.

One criticism some players had of the last couple of games was the way in which the pace and power of elite players could dominate a match. Tweaks, particularly in defence, have gone a long way to neuter that and provide a tighter game. Centre backs get close in on attackers for controlled marking, while full-backs track well and interfere with wingers before they can hit top speed. While pace and power are still important, timing has become ever-more crucial.

EA totes a new in-game training system, FIFA Trainer, which offers contextual recommendations to the player. With this optional graphical overlay, players can learn on the fly, with the trainer recommendations advancing alongside the player.

The headline addition for many, though, will be the inclusion of 12 women's national teams for the first time in the series' history. Teams from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and the United States of America are all on-hand to represent their countries in game modes including Kick Off, an Offline Tournament, as well as Online Friendly Matches.

It's an inclusion that's not just cosmetic - without, say, the speed of Ronaldo or the strength of Yaya Toure, the finesse offered by on-pitch gameplay improvements is crucial to dominating the pitch.

Treyarch also introduces its new Specialist system, which lets players choose and rank up nine elite Black Ops soldiers, each with their own look, personality, voice and battle-hardened weapons and abilities, fundamentally changing the way players engage in combat. Multiplayer is rounded out with an all-new weapon customisation system that give players more powerful tools than ever to build and personalise that perfect weapon. Additional details about multiplayer will be announced at a later date.

No Treyarch title would be complete without its signature Zombies, rounding out the offering. Call of Duty: Black Ops III delivers a completely unique Zombies experience and is the most immersive and ambitious Zombies to date, complete with a new XP progression for players, adding unprecedented levels of depth and re-playability.

  • Underworld 1-4

    Underworld 1-4

The first four films in the series charting a battle for supremacy between vampires and werewolves. 'Underworld' (2003) stars Kate Beckinsdale as Selene, one of the sophisticated group of vampires known as Death Dealers who attempt to keep the feral Lycans (werewolves) in check. When Selene discovers a Lycan plot to kill one of the rare humans to have witnessed a vampire and werewolf battle, young doctor Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), she sets out to protect him and finds herself increasingly drawn to the doctor and the plot that surrounds him. In 'Underworld 2 - Evolution' (2006) Beckinsdale reprises her role as Selene. With Michael (Speedman) now half-werewolf and the vampire elder, Markus (Tony Curran), planning to awaken a long-lost brother who is a Lycan, Selene and Michael face a race against time to unlock the secrets of their bloodlines and prevent a potentially deadly war between the Lycans and Death Dealers. The events of 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans' (2009) take place centuries before those of the original film and tell of the origins of the feud between the vampires and their onetime slaves, the Lycans. In the Dark Ages, charismatic young Lycan Lucian (Michael Sheen) rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Bill Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), in his battle against the Death Dealer army and quest for Lycan freedom. 'Underworld: Awakening' returns to the present day and the issues faced by vampire warrior Selene (Beckinsdale). When humans discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, Selene must escape imprisonment and lead the battle to protect both species from the threat of extermination by the forces of humanity. It may well prove her toughest challenge yet.

  • FIFA 15

    FIFA 15

The beautiful game is back, and with the 2014/2015 football season now well underway, Electronic Arts has another FIFA game for fans to dig their studs into. This year, the latest iteration of the game isn't about big, flashy updates attempting to overhaul the game. Rather, it's about focusing on the series' core gameplay and making the tweaks and refinements that might not seem huge to the casual observer, but to the hardcore fan will be hugely evident. EA has really doubled down on maintaining the pedigree that has made FIFA the dominant soccer game over the last few years.

The new bells and whistles EA is touting include (as ever) improved graphics, with pitches that show wear and tear over the course of the match and improved player visuals. There's also the inclusion of the Turkish league and 'emotional intelligence' that delivers greater authenticity in how players react to the on-pitch action.

On the pitch, though, players will notice other changes that might not be as obvious on the game's surface, but run a lot deeper. Defenders now turn with greater deliberateness and are more likely to catch attackers rather than standing around and looking nonplussed. Similarly, AI is better on the attack. Your players will burst into space on the overlap for a return ball without your prompting. You can also pick up control of the reciever of a goal kick, corner, throw-in or free kick, meaning you don't have to just hoof the ball in and hope your team makes the best of it.

It's these new tweaks - tweaks that will keep on surprising you hours after you've fired up the game - that will make all the difference for FIFA fans, building on what's already gaming's premier football series.
